Pow Day Returns to Utah with Over 1,000 Skiers and Riders

On January 13, 2017 – statically the snowiest day in Utah – we teamed up with Alta, Snowbird, Powder Mountain, Sundance Mountain Resort, Ski Utah, Snocru, Ski Butlers and Discrete to create an actionable day where skiers and riders were challenged to travel to the mountains in an environmentally responsible way.

“The bigger picture here,” commented Chris Steinkamp, Executive Director, Protect Our Winters, “is for us all to break from our habits and consider traveling to the mountains via ski bus or carpooling with friends.”

On POW Day, over 1,000 skiers and riders carpooled or rode the ski bus to the mountain including POW Riders Alliance athletes Julian Carr, Forrest Shearer, Alex Deibold, Caroline Gleich, Kaitlyn Farrington and Seth Wescott. Our efforts for the day offset the equivalent of a 2,455 acre forest (roughly the size of Snowbird) actively absorbing CO2. Imagine what we could accomplish if we reassessed how we get to the mountain every time we hit the slopes.

We’re excited to see our community rethinking how they get to the mountain and we hope this action sparks a commitment to climate advocacy, too. Luckily, our friends at both Snowbird and Solitude are making it easy to travel responsibly by rewarding skiers and riders who carpool or take the Ski Bus. Check out all the details here:

• At Snowbird you can earn a half-priced transferrable ski ticket for 10 carpooling trips, plus preferential parking.

• At Solitude you can also earn a half-price ticket for 10 carpooling trips or coffee or hot chocolate after just 5 carpooling trips.   Thanks again to all of you who participated in Utah’s Second Annual POW Day, we’ll see you on the slopes next year! #POWDay17
