Stop the Nomination of Steve Pearce to Lead the Bureau of Land Management

The Trump administration has nominated Steve Pearce to lead the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), the agency responsible for managing more than 245 million acres of public lands.

Many of these public lands are crucial carbon sinks, provide wildlife habitat, sustain rural economies, and offer the access that outdoor communities depend on. Leadership at the BLM directly shapes how those lands are managed and whether decisions prioritize long-term public benefit or short-term extraction.

Pearce’s record of supporting expanded oil and gas development raises serious concerns about his ability to steward public lands in the public interest, especially at a time of accelerating climate impacts.

This nomination matters because decisions made at the BLM influence:

  • Climate pollution from federal lands
  • Certainty and safety of recreation access
  • The health of wildlife corridors
  • The stability of the $1.2 trillion outdoor recreation economy

Confirming extractive-aligned leadership risks locking in more drilling when science demands responsible management and long-term thinking. Climate progress requires federal land management grounded in science, accountability, and stewardship for future generations, not treated as extraction zones.

POW is educating lawmakers on what’s at stake, and closely monitoring the Senate confirmation process. Congress must exercise oversight and reject leadership that prioritizes short-term development over long-term stewardship.
