Protect Our Winters to be Benefactor of the 2017 Discrete Cirque Series

BOULDER, Colo. – April 19, 2017 – Protect Our Winters (POW), the leading climate change advocacy group in the outdoor community, announces its nonprofit partnership today with the Discrete Cirque Series, the premiere short-distance, max-elevation trail running series in North America.

Featuring races across five top mountain destinations in North America, the Discrete Cirque Series invites serious mountain athletes and enthusiasts to race at any of the five events at the following U.S. ski resorts for the 2017 summer race season:

  • Deer Valley, Utah: June 24
  • Alta, Utah: July 15
  • Arapahoe Basin, Colorado: July 29
  • Alyeska, Alaska: August 12
  • Snowbird, Utah: August 26

In its third year, the Series will be adding a donation component to this year’s nonprofit of choice, Protect Our Winters. Cirque Series will donate $1 from every participant’s registration fee to POW, while expecting up to 400 runners per race.

“As Protect Our Winters branches out to engage the broader outdoor community, the Cirque Series is the perfect opportunity to do so,” says Barbara Weber, POW senior brand manager. “Chances are these racers are all skiers or snowboarders who enjoy the mountains year-round and will be able to identify with our cause. It’s an added bonus that the series was started and is run by one of our most active Riders Alliance members, Julian Carr. We’re grateful to Julian and his team for giving us this opportunity for not only valuable exposure, but fundraising, too.”

During and immediately following each race, Discrete will host music, food, drinks, a vendor expo, and entertainment at the race village for brands and athletes to connect in a fun, festive atmosphere. POW hopes to be on hand when possible to add an onsite advocacy component and give guests the opportunity to take immediate action against climate change.

“Cirque Series is proud to partner with Protect Our Winters,” says race founder Julian Carr. “We are celebrating the mountains, we love nature, and POW is working hard to ensure we can enjoy the vibrancy of our mountain culture for generations to come. Cheers to POW!”
