Lobby Camp

Lobby Camp

What is Lobby Camp?

Every year, POW staff, athletes and partners head to the Hill (Washington D.C.’s Hill that is) to talk with our elected officials about the outdoors, climate change and how they can help represent the 50 million members of the Outdoor State.

This year because of the COVID-19 crisis, we won’t be physically on the Hill, but we’ll still be meeting digitally and have plans for the whole community to get involved. While we’re going to miss those tiny elevators, snack restrictions (you can’t bring food in?!) and running (literally running) in 100 percent humidity and 90-degree heat from meeting to meeting, we’re actually a little excited to test the waters on getting all of YOU into the lobbying fold. (Never thought your dirtbag days would become lobby days, eh?)

Any outdoor enthusiast knows adapting to rapidly changing conditions is the nature of the game. It’s in that spirit Protect Our Winters is adapting its annual DC Lobby Day and turning it into a virtual week-long “lobby camp” open to the entire POW community!

As is the case with any camp, we’ll start things off with orientation. POW’s Community Lobby Training was Monday, June 8th at 5:30 pm (MST)/7:30 pm (EST). In just 90 minutes, we’ll train you on the importance of phoning your member of Congress, guide you through the specific climate and clean energy policy requests we’re making this year, and prepare you on how to make an effective ask. Missed it live? Watch the recording below!

Your participation will amplify the efforts of our ambassadors like Tommy Caldwell, Jessie Diggins, Caroline Gleich and dozens of others. We WILL have the voices of the Outdoor State heard by our elected officials!

Phone – to call your reps!

Notepad – to write a few notes on what you plan to say, and any questions you may have!

Prior reading – check out these articles from our POW staff – the third article details what our sister organization, Protect Our Winters Action Fund, will be talking with our representatives about this week!

This season, POW is using an app call Team to help support our lobbying efforts. When you join our Team you will get notifications for when is the best time call your Member of Congress and how you can continue to support POW. After our Lobby Camp, we will be asking you all to help turn your community out to vote in November!
