Stimulus: Round 2

We’re betting you’ve heard a lot about Congress passing ‘stimulus packages’ in response to COVID-19. (Quick tip: a stimulus package is a bill of economic measures put together by a government to energize the economy. The goal is to minimize or lessen the impact of a recession by boosting both employment and spending. Bam.)

Economic Relief & Stabilization

In the current state of the world, before we’re ready to turn to a stimulus package – which is meant to serve as economic stabilization – we’ve needed relief. We need testing kits and personal protective equipment and support for healthcare workers and more. That’s what the CARES Act passed by Congress was: a recovery package. At POW, we understand that this is not only critical but the priority. Relief needs to come first.

Given the intensity and emergency of this pandemic, we may very well see more recovery packages. But with trillions in motion toward relief, now is the time to start thinking about how we rebuild our economy. A stimulus package must be included in the conversation, meant for economic stabilization.

Where Clean Energy Comes In

There are many industries and businesses hurting from the economic consequences of a global pandemic. You’ve likely heard about bailouts for the airline industry and the fossil fuel industry. We think it is immensely important that clean energy is part of these conversations, too.

We believe a stabilization package should include support for the renewable energy industry, which is reeling from supply chain disruptions and project cancellations, resulting in deep losses in both revenue and power generation potential. There are 3.4 million Americans with careers in the clean energy economy whose jobs are at risk. Early estimates from the solar industry predict losses of up to 120,000 jobs (that’s just shy of half of the industry’s jobs), and the wind industry forecasts a loss of 35,000 jobs.

During the pandemic, we have watched pollution levels plummet as fossil fuel operators close and traffic comes to a stop. This is never the path we would choose to reduce emissions, but the crisis does open a window into thinking creatively about how we rebuild.

We have the opportunity to rebuild our country with clean power to lessen the impacts of climate change, protecting the outdoor recreation opportunities and lifestyles we love. Join us in asking for that future.
