Protect Our Winters has partnered with our friends at the SuddenRush Atlantic Rainforest Initative in an effort to pool the contributions of the winter sports community so as a united front, we can protect one of the last remaining rainforests on earth.
Rainforests absorb vast amounts of CO2 and tropical deforestation is the second largest cause of climate change. Burning tropical forests contributes 20% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions, that is more then all cars, trucks, trains and planes combined!! Saving rainforests is the fastest and most effective way to stabilize global climate change and it is a critical part of the larger solution.
The Atlantic Forest stretches along Brazil’s Atlantic coast. It extends inland to eastern Paraguay and the province of Misiones in northeastern Argentina, and narrowly along the coast into Uruguay. The Atlantic rainforest is almost gone - less that 7% of that once-expansive forest remains today.
Our target is to protect 172 acres, on behalf of the winter sports community, creating an ecolological corridor that one day will reach the borders of the Serra do Conduru State Park. All intact rain forest that we sponsor is then transferred into a natural reserve that guarantees governmental protection for eternity.
Whether you’re a pro or a weekend rider, we invite you to join the POW Rider’s Alliance by offsetting your carbon footprint from your riding this past year so as a community, we’ll purchase acreage and protect it forever. Each of us should contribute in some way to help protect the lifestyle we love and by taking responsibility for the amount of CO2 we generate each season, collectively we’ll help slow down global warming for generations of riders behind us.
Here’s how it works:
1. Click on SRARFI website here and click the “Donate Now” button.
2. Based on the data you provide them, they’ll calculate your carbon footprint and let you how much it would take to offset that amount by purchasing and protecting rainforest property. Again, $56 will offset one ton of CO2 and purchase 13 square meters of Atlantic Rainforest.
3. Once you make that contribution, they’ll use it to purchase the rainforest land through the SuddenRush Atlantic Rainforest Initiative and protect it forever.
4. You will be able to see the property that you helped purchase via Google Maps on www.Atlantic Rainforest.org. Your name will also be added to the list of contributors on this page.
